The play is an “opera with no music”, inspired by Camillo Boito’s novel Senso and Luchino Visconti’s film of the same name.
The play concerns countess Libia Serpieri’s passionate love for the Austrian sergeant Franz Mahler. The countess falls desperately in love with Franz, but he forsakes her. Blinded by hatred, she betrays him, denouncing him for desertion. Franz is arrested and led to the firing squad. Betrayal remains eternal, just as the heroine remains immortal. Countess Libia Serpieri is a remnant of history; having lived through the 19th and 20th centuries, she reaches the 21st mentally exhausted.
It is a play about the body; about identity, reason, mortality, permeability, elimination…
The play has been translated into French.
