About us

The Greek Play Project (greek-theatre.gr) was founded in 2014 to support, disseminate, study and promote contemporary Greek playwriting. It is an extended network of collaborations, projects and actions, but also a space for exchange and knowledge.

77 contemporary Greek playwrights (an ever-growing group) participate in the online platform and more than 600 plays (from 1959 to the present) are included, capturing the contemporary dramaturgical landscape, while 61 theatre scholars submit their studies and texts on modern Greek dramaturgy. At the same time, a group of theatrologists, journalists and critics cover every noteworthy relevant activity with interviews, reviews and theoretical texts, contributing to the constructive dialogue between theory and practice.

As part of the dissemination of Greek dramaturgy abroad, since 2018 GPP has been organising the Greek Play Project New York in collaboration with Eclipses Group Theatre, under the auspices of the Greek Consulate in New York, the Alexander S. Onassis Program of Greek Studies at New York University, the Hellenic Association of Theatre and Performing Arts Critics, and with the collaboration of the National Theatre of Greece.

It has also been responsible for running theatre competitions, like ‘Write your myth’ in 2015 and ‘Let’s laugh’ in 2019. It has also put on shows, run workshops and held meetings, and has taken part in various activities abroad to promote Greek theatre. This includes the recent collaboration on the publication of the first book of plays by Greek writers in Polish by Sokolis and the Warsaw Theatre Institute (2023) and a collaboration on the analogues of the Portuguese group Coletivo Sabotagem (2024).

The Greek Play Project is inspired by, created and managed by the dramaturg and theatre critic Dr. Irene Moundraki and head project manager is the theatrologist Maria Karananou. It is a private initiative based entirely on the vision of people who love contemporary Greek plays.
