Act I
Maria Barbarousou is a woman in her fifties, fiercely proud of her roots on the island of Paros and her descent from a long line of corsairs and pirates. She lives alone in an apartment in Athens and teaches English at a public evening school. Recently, she suffered a great deal at the hands of her neighbours, whose extraordinarily noisy and antisocial behaviour led to a fire that partially destroyed her home. These events forced her to spend most of the summer on Paros. Now, in mid-September, she has returned to Athens at the start of a second pandemic lockdown, only to discover that her new neighbours are worse than the previous ones. And she is ready to take action… Act II Twelve years later. Maria has retired and now lives permanently on Paros with her adopted daughter, Nikoleta. Nikoleta has been accepted into medical school and is preparing to move to Athens. A few days before her departure, the two of them go swimming at a quiet beach. Under the hot summer sun, Maria is tormented by the fear that, in Athens, Nikoleta will discover the truth about her biological parents and the tragic circumstances of their deaths. Terrified by the prospect, she wonders what she should reveal to her daughter. Something? Nothing? Everything? What impact can a decision made in a moment of crisis have on the future? The answer will not be simple, even for the great-granddaughter of a famous pirate. Staged at Theatre 104 in 2023.
