- In the storeroom of an old video rental shop, two friends hatch a daring plan. Vasilis wants to leave Greece and start a new life in America. To obtain a residence permit, he has arranged a sham marriage to an American citizen and must now prepare for his interview with the US authorities. He asks for help from his best friend, Spyros, who owns the neighbourhood’s last remaining video rental shop and dreams of turning its storeroom into a private film club. Together, they begin inventing the fictitious couple’s story in meticulous detail: from how they met and their shared memories to the “bride’s” habits and preferences. Gradually, the storeroom becomes a space for rehearsals, interrogations and fantasies, where reality and fiction begin to blur. Through comic rehearsals, film references and shifts between the storeroom and an interrogation room at Chicago airport, the two friends confront not only the lie they are constructing but also their own thwarted hopes. Vasilis seeks escape “elsewhere”, while Spyros clings to a world that is disappearing. Based on a true story, VIDEO CLUB FANTASIA is a comedy about friendship, migration, disappointment and the need for a fresh start.
