A poetic play modelled on the tragedies and verse romances of the Cretan Renaissance. An Erotokritos for today. A contemporary verse romance about the idealisation of love, inspired by a true love story in Crete in 1950, as documented in newspapers of the period, journalistic investigations and private family archives.
At the end of the war, a Poet returns from voluntary exile to the city of his birth. He conceives the idea of “composing” a poem—a hymn to true love—in an attempt to build a new mythology upon the ruins left by war: a mythology of love and life.
A chance glance exchanged by two young people in the street one afternoon prompts him to cast them as the “living protagonists” of his story. He urges them to meet again, fall in love and act with heroism, passion and selflessness. With the help of two trusted friends, they must overcome the seemingly insurmountable obstacles posed by their politically opposed families before they can be together.
With the Poet’s help, their story moves beyond the confines of private life and becomes a myth in the words and minds of “ordinary mortals”. Will the characters remain true to their choices and actions to the very end? Will they prove worthy of the expectations people have placed upon them?
