In Aigaleo, a mother and her two sons struggle to keep their old family pastry shop alive following the recent, tragic death of the father. The shop, which has been operating since 1973 and seems untouched by time, becomes the setting for a clash between three different views of family, responsibility and personal happiness.
Markos, the elder son, has worked in the shop since he was eighteen. He has never really had the chance to ask himself whether he might want a different life. His younger brother, Lefteris, managed to study Gastronomy and work at a leading patisserie, until his father’s death forced him to return to the family business. Once there, however, he refuses to compromise. He wants them to sell the old shop and start afresh.
Their mother resists. She insists that they carry on as before, even as customers dwindle and the neighbourhood grows hostile towards the family. As the two sons clash over the future of the business, old wounds and family secrets come to the surface.
Sweet Dreams is a contemporary, realistic family drama about the distance between the life we lead and the life we once imagined. The play asks: why don’t we change our lives when we are unhappy with them? And, ultimately, do close family ties protect us or trap us?
