  • Tsar Václav sends his three sons to find the thief who has been stealing his golden apples. The cunning Ivan puts his brothers to sleep, steals a feather from the Firebird and sets off alone for the Black Forest. With the help of the wolf Volk, he reaches the palace of the sorcerer Koschei, where he is transformed into a rooster, imprisoned in a cage and freed by Yelena, Koschei’s daughter, who promises to marry him. When he cruelly rejects her, Yelena is revealed to be the Firebird herself. Ivan’s brothers steal the bird, and the Tsar banishes Ivan, until Ivan pulls out the feather and Yelena returns to her human form and confirms the truth. Ivan marries Yelena and becomes Tsar, having learned that true worth comes from honesty and courage, not cunning.
