- Tasso, an elderly aristocratic lady, is moved by Marina’s story. Having left her abusive partner, Marina is homeless and alone, so Tasso offers her the use of her grandson’s apartment. He lives abroad and visits his grandmother two or three times a year. The two women grow fond of each other, and Tasso hopes to marry off her bachelor grandson to Marina, who is trying to write her first novel. Her grandson, Ilias, returns unexpectedly with his fiancée, whom he intends to introduce to his grandmother, without notifying her beforehand. At first, he and Marina occupy the apartment without either realising that the other is there. When they finally meet, a comic misunderstanding ensues, with witty exchanges and verbal clashes, until Tasso negotiates a temporary compromise. Ilias and Marina take an immediate dislike to each other, and Ilias recognises her as the “thief” who stole his wallet on the metro. His grandmother, however, strongly dislikes Lilian, his bride-to-be, and refuses to believe the accusations against Marina. Despite the couple’s comical attempts to get Marina out of the apartment, they fail: she has Tasso on her side. Determined to have her way, Tasso tells Ilias that she will not leave him her estate if he marries Lilian. After a series of humorous confrontations involving all four characters, Ilias begins to warm to the clever, quick-witted Marina and enjoy her responses, while Lilian’s erratic and spiteful behaviour increasingly irritates him. Eventually, Stamatis appears: a streetwise conman who has followed Lilian along the street. She “works” for him, luring wealthy men into his schemes, but he had recently lost track of her. It also emerges that Stamatis is the abusive partner Marina left. The truth finally comes out: Lilian stole Ilias’s wallet and blamed Marina, who happened to be standing beside them on the metro. Intimidated by Tasso’s threats, Stamatis leaves with Lilian. Ilias, meanwhile, shows his affection for Marina, who has already begun to fall in love with him… Marina’s novel, based on her own life, becomes a bestseller, and the couple, now together, make Tasso a very happy grandmother.
