Lovers on Canvas is a hymn to love and to women. To forbidden love, which is never legitimised by the bonds of marriage. To passionate love, which at first gives life and, in the end, destroys it. A play about the love of art and the art of love.
The man is the creator. The woman is the lover, the muse, the model — the source of art and desire. There are many lovers: some anonymous, others famous; some hidden, others known to the world. From among them, two women emerge: Fornarina, the lover and muse of the Renaissance painter Raphael, and Jeanne Hébuterne, the lover and model of the tormented painter Amedeo Modigliani.
You have to scratch beneath the canvas to discover the truth. You have to reopen the wounds to discover the woman.
“We still have life ahead of us. We still have work to do. It is time to put the eyes back in their sockets. Eyes of the sea, eyes of honey, eyes of pitch. Set my throne firmly in the sky. Where the light can reach it.”
Theatre becomes an inverted mirror, illuminating what official History leaves in darkness. The forgotten and the dead are finally vindicated. The time comes when… “There is no escaping the Lovers.”
The play has been translated into Italian and Spanish.
