Two related families live in neighbouring houses, locked in a bitter feud that causes daily conflict and tension. At the root of their hatred lies a secret that has haunted three generations.
Rena lives with her mother, who has instilled in her a hatred of her cousin Matina’s family. She suffers from kidney failure and is waiting for a kidney transplant. Matina lives with her father, while her sons are pursuing successful careers in Germany. The two cousins make life difficult for each other every day. Even Rena’s serious illness and daily dialysis sessions do nothing to curb her desire for revenge.
When Martha’s younger son returns from Germany after years away, he meets Rena’s daughter, Anita, by chance and falls in love with her. He tries to get to know her and uncover the carefully guarded secret behind the feud, turning to a neighbour who is a friend of both families.
He learns that his wealthy great-grandfather raped a young woman who had been taken into his family’s care, leaving her pregnant, before marrying a wealthy bride. Martha’s family descended from his marriage, while Rena’s family descended from the child he had with the young woman outside marriage. Each family inherited half of his estate, fuelling a dispute that lasted for decades.
Following a series of tragicomic clashes between the families, a compatible kidney donor is found after a fatal car accident in Central Europe. Rena’s transplant is successful, but it emerges that the donor was Martha’s son, who died in the accident and was an organ donor whose kidney was compatible with Rena.
The two young people, who are already in a relationship, tell their mothers about this tragic coincidence. After dramatic scenes in both households, the families agree to meet. Deeply moved, they acknowledge their mistakes and accept their children’s union.
The play portrays the quarrels of feuding neighbours, the challenges faced by people with kidney disease undergoing dialysis, the crucial moment of transplantation and the lifesaving consent to organ donation.
