The play recounts the unsolved murder of journalist George Polk in post-war Greece.
In 1948, the well-known journalist, married to the Greek Rhea Kokkoni, reports on the political situation in Greece for American newspapers. He has uncovered mismanagement and illicit dealings by politicians and systematically investigates collusion between the gendarmerie, Americans and black marketeers.
While attempting to interview Vafiadis, the leader of the Democratic Army, Polk disappears. Two days later, his body is found floating in the Thermaic Gulf, his hands and feet bound, with a gunshot wound. The authorities blame the communists for his murder.
His wife and his assistant investigate in an effort to uncover the truth. They discover that Polk had learned that American financial aid was reaching Greece through the personal bank account of a minister in the Tsaldaris government. Polk intended to expose the minister by bringing the case before the Greek courts…
Polk’s murder had international repercussions.
