Theodore Tsapakidis is a translator, writer and director. His work is marked by humour and existential anxiety. His characters are outsiders: frustrated, in crisis and, paradoxically, optimistic.
He has written plays (including Swell!, Romeo and Juliet: Waiting), poetry (Room Sky, among others), novels (The Elephant of Hotel Phidias, among others), fairy tales (The Prince of Menoua, among others) and short stories (Homo Demens, among others).
In 2007, he directed My Name Is Rachel Corrie.
As a dramaturg, he contributed to a stage adaptation of Stefan Zweig’s Chess Story and to a tribute production drawing on the works of Loula Anagnostaki, both presented at the Athens Festival. He adapted and directed Lysias’s On Behalf of the Invalid and The Little Prince and His Rose, a chamber musical based on the correspondence between Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and his wife, both staged at the Katakouzenos House. In 2023, he directed his play Swell! at Theatre 104. In 2019, his play Motherland was presented at the International Analogio Festival, directed by Ch. Tzioukalia.
He has translated plays (A Moon for the Misbegotten, staged at Poreia Theatre), writings on theatre (Yoshi Oida, among others), philosophical and critical works (Edgar Morin, among others), popular science (Roger Penrose, among others), literature (Nadine Gordimer, Patricia Highsmith, Jean-Patrick Manchette, among others), comics, and articles for festivals, museums and exhibition catalogues.
From 2016 to 2020, he produced and hosted Giaxempore on the online radio station metadeftero.gr.
In 2018, he served to the office of Deputy Minister of Culture Kostas Stratis as a special adviser, serving until the end of the minister’s term.
In 2020, his flash fiction piece An Old Raft was selected through the competition for inclusion in the anthology 100 Words in 100 Hours for Shedia.
That same year, his short story Ludwig received a distinction in the Magik Pen Writing competition and was published in the anthology The Next Day.
In December 2022, he co-founded BLANDA, a civil non-profit company, with Elpida Topaloglou.
He works in the public education system.
