The Snow Queen is an enduring story of faith, devotion, coming of age and friendship.
Kai and Greta are two friends who love each other deeply. Each has planted a rose in a flowerpot and, as their friendship grows, so do the roses, intertwining with one another. One winter evening, Greta’s grandmother tells them the story of a magician whose magic mirror shattered into a million pieces. When one of the fragments enters Kai’s eye, the Snow Queen appears and takes him away with her.
Greta decides to search for Kai on her own. A flower helps her enter the river, and she reaches a meadow. As she continues her journey, she encounters an impudent crow who believes she has seen Kai married to a princess and leads Greta to a castle. Greta is captured in the forest by robbers, but their young female leader protects her. Two pigeons tell her that Kai has been captured by the Snow Queen. Finn, the young bandit girl’s reindeer, helps Greta on her journey. Finn and Greta reach Lapland, the land of the reindeer, and then Finland, where a wise Finnish woman advises them on how to find Kai. After a battle through snow and ice with the Queen’s guards, Greta finds Kai. Her tears melt the ice in his heart, and he remembers her once again. The Snow Queen has been defeated.
After a long journey, the two children finally return home, where summer has come again. They, too, have grown, as have their rose bushes.
