Cake, a play by Vangelis Ηatziyannidis, will represent the National theatre of Greece at the 17th International Adana Theatre Festival in Turkey. The play has been successfully performed at the “Nikos Kourkoulos” Stage for two consecutive theatrical seasons.
This year, apart from the participation of Turkish theatrical productions, the festival has invited various troupes from the USA, China, Portugal, France and Ukraine while various workshops are scheduled to take place during the festival.
The play is inspired by an everyday occurrence; the baking of a cake, a gesture to welcome home the super’s daughter who is coming back from abroad. Instead, a civil war breaks out among the tenants of the building, when they find out that one of them systematically throws their rubbish from their balcony on the pavement in front of their building. In their effort to find out who is behind this, the neighbors will react violently and reveal several secrets, while the super is trying to keep everything in balance. Among the tenants, there’s also an immigrant from another country.
Zero tolerance against foreigners or anything “different” exposes the ugly face of society and leads to an inevitable conflict and unforeseeable revelations between the characters. Is it really possible, after all, to overcome stereotypes and the prejudice that stand in the way of civilized communication and accepting each other’s differences?
