Atelier Théâtral Grec celebrates its 30-year presence

The Atelier Théâtral Grec in Brussels celebrates its 30 years with a festive weekend that will take place from 1-3 May.

In 1984, Greek officials of several community institutions in Brussels founded a theatre group, motivated by their love for theatre, but also from a need to establish a more direct social relationship between them.

Although Greek officials coming from European institutions mainly compose most of the group, group participation is open to anyone interested. After all, the group has no statute, no elected or appointed bodies of any kind and no economic, political or other dependency.

In a span of 30 years, with no external financial support whatsoever, the workshop has managed to make 45 productions of Greek plays, working tirelessly and consistently in its effort to promote Greek culture abroad.

For its 30 year celebration, the Atelier will present a public staging of the following plays; Salty Sky by Akis Dimou and Smoke keeper by Andreas Staikos. The two playwrights, who are officially invited, will attend the presentation of their work for both performances that will be followed by a discussion of their work with the audience.

On Sunday, May 3, Who discovered America by Chrissa Spilioti, will be presented anew, a performance that was distinguished in the 30th Amateur Theatre festival in Karditsa that took place in March 2014. After the performance, a debate on amateur theatre will follow between various representatives of Greek theatre groups working in Brussels, including the Belgium Greek Theatre, the Theatrical Group of the Greek community in Brussels, the Lyceum Club of Greek women, Nota Theatrale and the Greek theatre workshop. The discussion will be monitored by Newsville’s John Dimas. Along with the aforementioned activities, a photography exhibition of the late founding member of the team Nikos Papadimitriou will also be held as well as a poster exhibition by Theodoros Kasapis.
